An Gadsden woman has been arrested after  salvia  is discovered in an apartment, according to Deputy Commander Phil Sims.

Shelly Terrell Burns, 29, of  Gadsden, Al. is charged with trafficking in synthetic drugs (salvia) and chemical endangerment of a child.

On June 2, 2017, Gadsden Police Officers Simmeon Smith and Terry Thomas responded to a call about drug activity at an apartment on White Ave.

Once there, Officers knocked on the door and spoke to an individual in the apartment. While speaking to her, they could smell the overwhelming odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the residence. At this time, officers secured the residence.

Further investigation resulted in the seizure of approximately 70 grams of  synthetic drugs (salvia).

Also, a small child less than a year old was in a playpen in the living room area where all the marijuana and salvia were being smoked. It is unknown how long the child had been breathing the smoke. DHR responded to the apartment and took custody of the child. On call ECDEU agent and Gadsden Detective were notified.

Burns was booked into the Etowah County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash bond.
