Forgive me for a minute as I do something I may have never done in November.. It’s basketball season yall!
Yes, before you say I am jumping ship and forgetting all about football, you are wrong. First, I have followed UGA basketball pretty steady since the Jim Herrick days. However, over the past 5 or so years I have really gotten into the team.
Maybe it’s because my oldest is the basketball manager for the Rome Lady Wolves, or just because I like their “blue chip work ethic”. Either, way, they have been a lot of fun.
I am calling it now, no I don’t think the Dawgs will win the National Title, or even the SEC, but I think they will compete and be dancing come March. I have a feeling that this team lead by senior guard JJ Frazier and junior forward Yante Maten could go at least two rounds in the Big Dance. This is something that hasn’t been done since 2002 when they lost in the 2nd round. That team then only lost by 2 to a really good Southern Illinois team. Since then they have only been dancing twice and were booted in first round losses.
In the history of the program the Dawgs have only made 10 appearances in the Big Dance. Only four times have they gotten out of the first round and only twice out of the 2nd round (1996 and 1983).
Those of us who have been in Stegman Coliseum the past few seasons have noticed a change. The stands are packed and the crowd is really energized. Now with Rayshaun Hammonds (a top 50 signee) committing to play for the G, Coach Mark Fox has something special brewing. Sit back, and if you get a chance flip the channel over to UGA basketball, you don’t want to miss this season. Get on the train before it leaves the station!
Last week in Potts’ Picks I went 9-1, my best record to date. With only three weeks left in the regular season I had better continue that trend.
