An elderly man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in Rome, Georgia. Authorities have identified the victim as 89-year-old Hayward Jameson, a resident of Floyd County.

According to Rome Police, officers were dispatched around 3 p.m. Friday to the rear lot of the Kroger shopping center on Turner McCall Boulevard after receiving reports of a vehicle crash. Upon arrival, they found a wrecked Cadillac SUV that had left the roadway and come to rest in a wooded area behind the store after striking a tree.

Emergency responders pronounced Jameson dead at the scene.

Floyd County Deputy Coroner Chris Giles said, “The GBI has declined an autopsy and the official cause of death has been ruled blunt force trauma.”

There were no passengers in the vehicle, and no other cars were involved.
