Calhoun Man Jailed for Assalting Woman After Being Accused of Cheating on Her

James Edward Smith, 32 of Calhoun, was arrested this week after reports said his wife accused him of texting other women.

Reports said that the victim asked Smith to hand over his cellphone and after this happened the couple did not speak for hours.

Later, Smith handed the victim divorce papers and the victim called her mother upset.  While on the telephone, Smith is accused of degrading her while using profane language.

It was then Smith allegedly grabbed a laptop and broke it over his stomach.  He then proceeded to break a pair of Costa sunglasses valued at $300.

The incident occurred in front of a child.

Smith is charged with simple battery, simple assault, 3^rd degree cruelty to children, two counts 2^nd degree criminal damage to property and aggressive driving.
