New jobless numbers were released by the Georgia Department of Labor on Thursday of last week. The numbers show an increase in unemployment in every region in the Peach State. Unemployment numbers have been consistently low for over two years, but the number of workers filing first-time unemployment claims in June was up statewide.

Chattooga County has the highest unemployment number in the Northwest Georgia Region at 4.6%. Neighboring counties also saw an uptick in the number of unemployed workers. Gordon County was the one exception, where the unemployment rate dropped between May and June.

The Georgia Department of Labor says that the increase in unemployment is due to the influx of student workers employed for the summer. They also note that there are more people working in Georgia now than at any other time in the state’s history.

The total number of employed workers in the state for June was just over 5.2 million.
