Branton Hughes, represented by his defense attorney Thomas M. Harris III of The Harris Law Firm, was found not guilty of all charges against him on May 2, 2024.

Hughes was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, battery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of firearm by a first offender probationer. Hughes was tried in 2022 on these same charges and found guilty on all counts, to which he was sentenced to life in prison. This 2022 case was overturned on appeal and granted a new trial.

On April 23, 2024, this case was retried with additional defense testimony not presented during the first trial. After seven business days of deliberation, Mr. Hughes was acquitted of all charges. For Hughes, today marks the first day of freedom from these charges since November of 2021.

According to the Harris Law Firm, the case was ultimately overturned because of one of the jury instructions that was given to the jurors.
