Local used car dealer Billy Joe Dooley was arrested by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office on charges of false report of a crime after he claimed that a vehicle was stolen.
Dooley was allegedly involved in a traffic accident on Highway 27 in Pennville and fled the scene of the accident. Dooley later reported that the Audi Q5 he was driving at the time of the accident had been previously stolen from his car lot at Truck Town. Dooley told a responding deputy that security cameras at his car lot were inoperable at the time the alleged theft took place.
Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader told WZQZ News that video evidence led investigators to believe that it was, in fact, Dooley who was driving the Audi at the time of the accident. Four people in the other vehicle involved in the accident received minor injuries, according to the sheriff. Dooley was charged by the sheriff’s office with false report of a crime and obstruction of law enforcement officers.
The Georgia State Patrol has additionally charged Dooley with failure to report an accident, failure to yield while turning left, hit and run and leaving the scene of an accident and open container of alcohol in connection with the accident.
