The Rome City Commissioners held a special called meeting Wednesday to allow several businesses to serve alcohol this Sunday for New Year’s Eve.
State law allows beer, wine and liquor service on Sundays if they meet the food-to-drink sales ratio. Several Rome businesses that only serve alcohol, as a result of the state law, have to be closed on Sundays. However, following a ruling several years ago that allowed the City of Savannah to serve beer on St. Patrick’s Day municipalities are allowed to designate a single Sunday a year when those businesses may operate.
Commissioners Craig McDaniel, Jim Bojo, Bill Collins, Bonny Askew and Jamie Doss, alongside Mayor Sundai Stevenson, voted to approve the resolution during a called meeting Wednesday.
The ruling now allows for alcohol to be served this Sunday at Cosmic Dog, the Alibi Prohibition Lounge, Old Havana Cigar, Beer Barrell, the Mesa and the Sports Page.
In 2024, City Commissioners could decide if they wanted to serve alcohol on Super Bowl Sunday or St. Patrick’s Day.
