Summerville City Manager Russell Thompson said that federal auditors from the IRS are in town looking at how the city withholds taxes from its employees. Thompson said that he believes that the errors come from a clerical issue and that officials are looking at tax forms showing the amount the city paid to federal wage withholding.
Thompson added that he does not believe the city shortchanged the IRS.
“They had approximately $570,000 in debits that we had paid into the system with un-matching returns. So we are having to go back and get the returns to match up to the debits to see what our liabilities are,” Thompson is quoted to say.
“Based on our internal checking, it looks like the debits are going to offset the returns.”
