Polk County Public Works has completed resurfacing work on all 21.06 miles of roadway included in the county’s 2026 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) paving project.

The project covered 12 county roads approved for improvements by the Polk County Board of Commissioners in January. All roads included on the original paving list were completed, with none removed from the project.

The 2026 paving list included:

  • Airport Loop
  • Collard Valley Road
  • Grady Road
  • Hightower Falls Road
  • Huntington Road
  • Knight Road
  • Lewis Road
  • Robinson Road
  • Rolling Hills Road
  • Sewell Road
  • Stringer Road
  • Yarborough Road

The county develops its annual paving list using road improvement requests submitted by residents and identified by county personnel. The Public Works Director evaluates and ranks the roads based on their condition and need, with the goal of addressing as many qualifying requests as possible.

Paving operations are generally limited by weather conditions, as outside temperatures must reach at least the mid-40s Fahrenheit for repaving work. As a result, crews completed most of the 2026 project between March and October.

Assistant County Manager Connor Hooper joined Polk County Public Works crews for a day during the summer to gain firsthand insight into the work involved in resurfacing county roads.

“We paved probably two to three miles, and it was a 10-hour day,” Hooper said. “Getting out there with those guys helped me really appreciate the hard and hot work they put in each day.”

With the paving portion finished, the project has moved into its final phase. Tidwell Striping Solutions is responsible for applying roadway markings, and all striping work is expected to be completed by January 2027.

The completed resurfacing provides smoother road surfaces for motorists while supporting the movement of goods throughout the county.

The 21.06 miles represent work completed under the county’s 2026 LMIG paving list and do not include additional paving projects performed by county crews for the cities of Cedartown and Rockmart.
