Veterans and eligible military families from Northwest Georgia will have a chance to receive a free turkey ahead of Thanksgiving during an upcoming distribution event in Rome.

United Military Care is teaming up with Sysco to host its “Give Thanks for Those Who Served” giveaway on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Rome Civic Center. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with one turkey provided per qualifying family.

The program is designed to show appreciation for those who have served in the armed forces while helping military households prepare for the holiday season.

Eligibility extends to military veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard members and reservists. Military dependents of currently deployed service members may also qualify, along with spouses of veterans who possess military identification cards.

Participants must register in advance. Those who complete registration will receive an email with directions and instructions for collecting their turkey. Organizers encourage applicants to double-check their email addresses to ensure they receive the necessary information.

Attendees must bring documentation confirming their military service or eligibility. Acceptable records include a Veterans Affairs identification card, a driver’s license displaying veteran status, a DD-214 discharge document, military identification or other qualifying military paperwork.

Organizers caution that turkeys will not be reserved for individuals who arrive after the distribution period ends.

Veterans from Chattooga County and other surrounding communities are welcome to participate, provided they meet the eligibility requirements.

Additional registration information is available through the City of Rome’s website at romega.us.
