Melvin Frank Grogan, 83, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
He was born on May 16, 1943, in Akron, Ohio to the late Boyd Richardson Grogan and Bessie Lucille Hayes Grogan. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his siblings Martha Solomons, Jack Grogan, and Margie Pope.
When he was a child, his family moved to Georgia and located in the Dykes Creek Community and began a career in farming. He served six years in the Army Reserves and became a journeyman electrician through IBEW Local 613. On February 24, 1968, he married Margaret Petty. He became a Mason at the East Floyd Masonic Lodge in 1969. Over the years, Melvin and Margaret started their family with the birth of their three children. Later in life they continued to expand their poultry farm.
In 1st Corinthians we are reminded that “…these three things remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” Melvin loved his God, his family, and his community. As a follower of Jesus, he was a faithful servant at Mizpah Methodist Church and Morrison Campground. Shorty was only a phone call away and would assist a neighbor with a need at a moment’s notice. He used his words sparingly but was an endless well of humor and wisdom.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret; his children Trina Dean (Kimsey), Nancy Creel, and Douglas Grogan; his grandchildren Torey Cooper (Zane) and Connor Creel; his great-granddaughters Lainey and Lakelyn Cooper; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 11:00 am in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with David Chupp officiating. Interment will follow at Floyd Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 3:00 pm until 5:00 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers will be Connor Creel, Zane Cooper, Kimsey Dean, Chad Grogan, Nicholas Grogan, Larry Fincher, and David Martin. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Boyd Grogan, Mark Grogan, and the Masons.
