A female inmate at the Polk County Jail was hospitalized Wednesday morning after she became unresponsive while being assisted by jail staff, according to the Polk County Jail.
The incident happened at approximately 3 a.m. Sept. 9. The woman had been in custody for about two days and was being monitored by jail staff for apparent signs of withdrawal, officials said.
The inmate had been arrested on a charge of possession of methamphetamine and was medically cleared for admission to the jail by Polk Medical Center.
According to jail officials, staff were assisting the woman with a shower when they noticed something was wrong. She became unresponsive after sitting in a chair.
Jail staff called 911 and began emergency treatment, including CPR, use of an automated external defibrillator and administration of Narcan, officials said.
Emergency medical personnel arrived and took over life-saving efforts before transporting the woman to an area hospital for further treatment.
The woman has since been released from the jail’s custody. Officials said they do not currently have information about her condition and cannot confirm her status.
The Polk County Jail is withholding the woman’s identity because of the limited information available from the hospital and uncertainty over whether her next of kin has been notified.
Officials said additional information will be released if it becomes available and can appropriately be shared.
