A Cherokee County man was killed Sunday night after a farm equipment accident in the McCord’s Crossroads community, according to the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities identified the victim as Barry Kerr.

The incident came to light around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a report that Kerr had not returned home. Family members told authorities he had been operating a skid steer while bushhogging earlier in the day.

A search effort was quickly organized, involving deputies, firefighters, emergency management personnel, rescue workers, family members, and local residents. Search teams used ATVs, drones, and four-wheel-drive vehicles to look for Kerr.

During the search, responders located an overturned skid steer submerged in a body of water. Emergency crews immediately began efforts to reach the operator while additional personnel, including Floyd EMS, responded to the scene.

Despite rescue efforts, Kerr was found deceased. Cherokee County Coroner Paul McDonald said Kerr died from injuries sustained in the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our office is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death,” McDonald said in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to the family and all those affected by this tragic loss.”

Officials have not released additional details about how the skid steer overturned.

Community members and multiple emergency response agencies assisted in the search and recovery operation. McCord’s Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department Chief Rich Lindsey thanked everyone who participated and offered condolences to Kerr’s family and friends.

The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office also expressed appreciation to the first responders, volunteers, family members, and neighbors who helped during the search effort.

The investigation remains ongoing.
