A man who was injured in a shooting at the MAPCO gas station in Piedmont is expected to recover, according to police. Piedmont Police identified the man as Elijah Young. Officers found him with a gunshot wound to his left leg after responding to the scene around 11 a.m. on July 20. The Piedmont Fire Department and Piedmont Rescue Squad also responded.
Before emergency crews arrived, several bystanders rushed to help Young. An off-duty Anniston Police officer used a belt as a makeshift tourniquet to help stop the bleeding.
The Anniston Police Department praised the officer’s actions in a social media post, saying he used his training to provide lifesaving care until first responders arrived. The department also wished Young a full and speedy recovery.
Police said the officer’s quick actions helped stabilize Young before medical personnel took over. Young was treated at the scene and then airlifted to a hospital for additional treatment. Police said Young’s family later reported that he is expected to be okay.
After investigating, Piedmont Police determined the shooting was accidental. According to police, the gun fired while it was inside Young’s vehicle due to negligent firearm handling.
Officers collected the firearm as evidence, but police do not expect to file criminal charges. The investigation has been completed, and the shooting has been officially ruled accidental.
Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson thanked the bystanders who helped Young, especially the off-duty Anniston officer who provided immediate medical care.
Johnson also reminded the public to practice safe firearm handling. He said people should always treat every firearm as if it is loaded, keep it pointed in a safe direction, and never handle it carelessly. He said a single moment of negligence can have life-changing consequences.
