As National Historic Preservation Month came to a close, the City of Cedartown recognized the volunteers and leaders who work year-round to preserve the community’s rich history.
During the May City Commission meeting, city commissioners officially proclaimed May as Historic Preservation Month and honored members of the Polk County Historical Society for their continued dedication to protecting and sharing Cedartown’s heritage.
Those recognized included Museum Director Arleigh Johnson, Historical Society President Roger Landrum, President-Elect Phillip Gammage, and Treasurer Anne Clay. City officials also acknowledged the many volunteers whose efforts help preserve local landmarks, historical records, and community traditions.
The Polk County Historical Society hosts a variety of educational and community events throughout the year, including grave marker cleanings, local author book signings, museum exhibits, and other programs designed to connect residents with the area’s history.
One of its upcoming summer programs is Colonial Fridays, a free weekly story time and activity series for children and families. The program will be held Fridays at 2 p.m. from June 19 through July 24. Additional information about the event and other Historical Society activities is available on the organization’s Facebook page.
The city’s Historic Preservation Month proclamation emphasized the importance of preserving not only historic buildings and sites but also the stories behind them. Officials encouraged residents to learn more about their community, volunteer with preservation organizations, explore historic neighborhoods, and help ensure local history is passed on to future generations.
The Polk County Historical Society Museum, located at 117 West Avenue in downtown Cedartown, is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The museum is located near the historic Post Office and West Cinema and welcomes visitors interested in learning more about Cedartown’s past.
