Mr. Hugh Howard Dunkin, age 96, of Rome, Georgia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at his residence.
Hugh was born in Rome, Georgia, on December 8, 1929, son of the late Thomas S. Dunkin and the late Lena Cole Dunkin. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Bill Dunkin, Tom Dunkin, Max Dunkin, Dan Dunkin, and Rachel Boudria.
Mr. Dunkin was a faithful member of West Rome Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Usher, and Sunday School Teacher for many years. He was a proud veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Prior to his retirement, he dedicated 37 years to Inland Container Corporation. During his time there, he helped start the Inland Container Credit Union, which later merged with Coosa Valley Credit Union, an institution that continues to serve the community today. He also served for many years on the Supervisory and Audit Committees of Coosa Valley Credit Union.
He found great joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially spending time fishing, playing golf, and watching his grandsons play baseball and football. He also took great pride in teaching his grandsons to play golf, creating lasting memories that will be cherished for generations.
Over the past five years, Mr. Dunkin was lovingly cared for around the clock by a devoted team of caregivers: Sherri Wimbely, Michelle Barrett, Pat Dowdy, Dawn Harshaw, Shawannie Ragland, Summer McBurnett, Anglea MacFarland, Tammie Brock, Jody Pierce, Marti Robles, and Diane Warner. The family is deeply grateful for their compassion, dedication, and the comfort they provided.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 73 years, Joyce Cantrell Dunkin; his son, Roger Dunkin (Kathy); his grandchildren, Landon Dunkin (Michelle), Loren Dunkin (Mara), Lawson Dunkin (Claire), Justin Czerniawski (Sabrina), and Trevor Czerniawski (Kaden); his great-grandchildren, Mila Dunkin, Olivia Czerniawski, Logan Czerniawski, and Ozzy Czerniawski; his sister-in-law, June Tarpley; his brother-in-law, Spence Cantrell; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 12:00 PM at West Rome Baptist Church, with Pastor Jarrod Roberts and Rev. Joe Tarpley officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, where Rome American Legion Post #5 Honor Guard will render military honors.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at West Rome Baptist Church from 10:00 AM until the hour of service.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and are asked to assemble at the church by 11:30 AM on Thursday.
