A Rome Middle School teacher, Becky Lane Scott, 45 of Rome, was arrested this week after administrators reported she was caught vaping inside a school bathroom.

School officials said the situation began when a vapor sensor was triggered in a female restroom. Assistant Principal Lance Underwood responded to the alert along with other staff members and made contact with the individual exiting the bathroom, identified as Scott.

Underwood reported that Scott admitted to vaping and handed over a vape pen at the scene, stating she was alone in the restroom at the time.

The school’s principal, Christian Barnes, later confirmed that Scott told administrators the device was a THC vape pen. Responding authorities said they observed the pen and identified it as containing THC oil based on training and experience. The device was collected as evidence.

During a subsequent interview, Scott again admitted to using the vape pen and told officials she had purchased it from a local gas station, knowing it contained THC. She reportedly said she used it to cope with anxiety during testing week.

Following the interview, Scott was taken into custody. A search of her belongings allegedly revealed one and a half kratom pills inside her bag, including a partially cut tablet.

Authorities escorted Scott off campus, where she was placed in handcuffs and transported to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office. She was booked on a charge of possession of a controlled substance under Georgia law.
