Deputies responded to a shots fired call involving Joel McDowell, 74, of Rockmart, following a reported neighbor dispute.
Dispatch advised that a resident had exited his home and discharged a firearm during an altercation with neighbors.
Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the complainant and two involved individuals who stated they were attempting to move a vehicle that was stuck in the yard. They reported that Mr. McDowell came outside, yelled at them, and fired a single shot.
A check of the vehicle revealed no bullet damage; however, the tires were covered in mud, consistent with attempts to move it.
Deputies then responded to Mr. McDowell’s residence on Fairview Road, where a spent 9mm shell casing was located on the front walkway. McDowell denied firing a weapon and became confrontational with deputies. He refused multiple commands to step outside and unlock the gated porch after being advised he was under arrest.
When Mr. McDowell retreated into the residence and made a statement that caused deputies to fear he may be retrieving a firearm, deputies forced entry and detained him.
During the detention, Mr. McDowell lost his balance and fell. Minor injuries were observed, and EMS was requested.
