The City of Rome has received invoices detailing the second-quarter 2025 deficit for the city’s Recycling Center, totaling over $109,000 to be divided equally among local governing bodies.

Commissioner Randy Quick announced during the latest City Commission meeting that the invoices show the City of Rome, the Rome-Floyd Solid Waste Commission, and Floyd County Government each owe $36,530.45, with the Solid Waste Commission’s invoice rounded to $36,530.46. Commissioner Quick moved to authorize payment of both the City’s and Solid Waste Commission’s shares, a motion seconded by Commissioner Collins.

The motion passed unanimously, but not without broader discussion about the financial strain of ongoing deficits.

Commissioner Wayne Robinson urged a comprehensive review of Recycling Center operations, including the City’s curbside recycling service, citing growing concern among commissioners over repeated quarterly shortfalls.

Commissioner Mark Cochran also weighed in, noting that the City recently approved a $500,000 tax increment financing request, while the Solid Waste Commission reportedly has a $9 million rainy day fund—suggesting resources may be available to explore more sustainable solutions.

As the deficit payments move forward, the Commission signaled a desire to improve the efficiency and long-term viability of the Recycling Center, which continues to play a critical role in the community’s waste management efforts.
