The Polk School District Board of Education convened for its regular session recently, approving a series of key purchases, program updates, and student opportunities aimed at enhancing district operations and educational experiences.

The meeting began with a special recognition of Advanced Placement Scholars from Cedartown and Rockmart High Schools, celebrating their academic achievements before turning to the day’s business agenda.

In financial updates, the board reviewed the district’s financial report for July, revealing that both revenues and expenditures were slightly below projections. Despite this, the district remains in a solid financial position with a general fund balance exceeding $1.1 million.

A number of significant purchases were approved during the session. The board authorized the acquisition of new transportation software from TransAct, costing $83,017, as well as a new 72-passenger school bus priced at $155,845. In addition, Westside Elementary will receive an outdoor walk-in freezer at a cost of $92,148, and the transportation department will be outfitted with an A/C recharging machine. The board also declared several older buses as surplus.

In other student-focused initiatives, the board approved funding for several upcoming student trips. These include agricultural shows in Perry, the state thespian conference, and a middle school National Junior Honor Society trip to Washington, D.C. and Williamsburg.

The board also accepted a $92,000 Perkins V Improvement Grant, which will support the Polk County College and Career Academy. Furthermore, members approved the district’s FY26 board training schedule and a resolution for a Social Security Replacement Plan.

After an executive session to discuss personnel matters, the board gave the green light to various staff recommendations.

Looking ahead, the next work session is scheduled for October 7, with the regular session to follow on October 14.
