Gordon County Commissioners have voted to keep the county’s millage rate for 2024 unchanged at 9.042 mills, following a public hearing during their regular meeting this week. This rate, combined with the 15.650-mill rate for the county school system, results in a total millage rate of 24.692 for Gordon County residents living outside the city limits of Calhoun.
City officials in Calhoun and Calhoun City Schools are expected to finalize their respective millage rates during their meeting on Monday night.
A “mill” represents one-thousandth of a dollar, or $0.001, with the millage rate determining the amount of tax paid per $1,000 of a property’s assessed value.
New Morgue Construction Approved
In other business, commissioners approved a construction agreement with Momon Construction, a Calhoun-based company, for a new morgue on Harris Beamer Road. The project, funded by a voter-approved 2018 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), is valued at $1,256,513.12. The new facility will also include a training area for county fire personnel.
Zoning Requests Approved
The board also heard and approved two separate zoning requests:
- A 6.778-acre parcel on Plainview Road will be rezoned to allow for the construction of a storage facility, following a unanimous recommendation from the Planning Commission.
- A parcel at 2998 Sugar Valley Road was rezoned to accommodate a new convenience store and gas station, despite concerns from local residents about traffic and potential alcohol sales. The request also received a 3-0 approval from the Planning Commission.
