A 29-year-old Cedartown man, Trenton Edward Lee Pope, was arrested on a series of charges following a violent incident and an extensive foot chase through residential areas.

Polk County Police Department said that they responded to a 911 call from a residence on Perry Street, where a suspect was reportedly acting violently. When officers arrived, Pope fled on foot, making a run for it through the backyard of the home.

A responding officer pursued Pope on foot, trying to cut him off by driving down nearby streets. As Pope crossed in front of the officer’s patrol car, he continued to flee through yards, eventually jumping a six-foot chain-link fence. The officer warned Pope that he would be bitten by a police dog or tased if he didn’t stop, but Pope refused to comply and continued running.

The officer eventually circled in his patrol car, heading toward Pope’s residence on Collard Valley Road and Edgewood Drive, hoping to intercept him. While checking yards in the area, the officer spotted Pope briefly peeking around the corner of a metal building. After pursuing him on foot once again, the officer lost sight of Pope and requested backup.

As additional officers arrived, they began clearing potential hiding spots. After a search, one officer discovered an outbuilding with a door that appeared to have been forced open. Inside, a blue sectional couch had been moved, revealing Pope lying on the floor behind it.

The officer, fearing for his safety, drew his firearm and issued loud verbal commands for Pope to show his hands. Initially, Pope refused to comply, with his hands tucked under his body. However, after a tense moment, Pope raised his hands above his head, at which point the officer transitioned to his taser.

Polk County Police Officer Clark Roberts entered the building and placed Pope into handcuffs without further incident. Pope was then taken into custody and handed over to the Polk County Police Department, as the original incident had occurred in the county jurisdiction.

Pope was charged with 1st-degree burglary, simple assault, obstruction, and prowling.
