Each September, communities across the nation recognize Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, shining a light on a crisis that touches families, schools, and workplaces in every community. Suicide is now one of the leading causes of death for young people ages 10–24, and numbers among adults have also risen sharply. In 2022 alone, more than 49,000 Americans died by suicide — the highest ever recorded.

But suicide is not always what people think. It doesn’t always look like someone crying every day or speaking openly about wanting to die. Sometimes the warning signs are subtle:

  • Isolating from friends, family, or coworkers
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Losing interest in things once enjoyed
  • Seeming “down and out” or more irritable than usual
  • Struggling to concentrate or keep up with school or work
  • Sharing negative or intrusive thoughts

It’s important to understand that having negative thoughts doesn’t always mean a person intends to harm themselves— but it does signal a need for help. That’s when checking in, asking how they’re feeling, and connecting them to resources can make all the difference.

Addressing Root Causes, Not Just Symptoms

Locally, Mindset & Body Reset in Rome is committed to being a safe place for those struggling. The practice emphasizes compassion and understanding without judgment, while exploring the underlying causes of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts — from nutritional deficiencies and sleep problems to trauma, stress, or physical health concerns.

“Too often, people feel like their only option is a prescription,” said Lori Leonard, PMHNP-C, founder of Mindset & Body Reset. “But medications alone don’t always fix the problem. We take an integrative approach — looking at the whole person — so people can find lasting healing and hope.”

Building an Awareness Campaign

Throughout September, Mindset & Body Reset is leading a “Stop the Stigma” awareness campaign to bring the community together in this fight. The campaign includes:

  • Educational posts and videos on the Mindset & Body Reset Facebook page
  • Free community talks and office presentations (available upon request)
  • Resources for schools, parents, and workplaces
  • Information on holistic treatment options that go beyond medication

The goal is to create a culture where people feel safe talking about mental health, checking in on loved ones, and seeking support without shame.
