Gordon County commissioners this week approved four rezoning requests and denied one, following a meeting that drew public input and debate.

The board rejected a plan to rezone property at 2721 Sugar Valley Road for a large poultry operation that would have included twelve chicken houses. Nearby residents spoke out against it during a public hearing, raising concerns about the impact on the community. The site is located in an area marked for mixed use in the county’s long-term development plan. Despite a prior recommendation for approval, commissioners voted it down, with only Commissioner Kurt Sutherland opposing the denial.

In contrast, a separate poultry farm request for land at T Johnson Road and Wilson Road in Ranger was approved unanimously. The applicant said she and her family would live on the farm. Some neighbors raised concerns, but the board moved forward with the approval.

Three other rezoning requests were also approved without opposition:

  • 2532 Pine Chapel Road in Resaca: From manufactured housing to low-density residential
  • 850 McEntyre Loop: From agricultural to low-density residential
  • 255 and 257 Qual Hollow Road in Sugar Valley: From agricultural to manufactured housing

All three had received recommendations to approve from the county’s Planning Commission.
