The City of Cedartown is pleased to announce that Kayci Stephens has been hired as the new director for the Cedartown Recreation Department.
That announcement won’t surprise most of you, afterall, Kayci has spent the last nine years working as an employee of the department. From cutting grass to chalking fields, helping with concessions and instructing future athletes, Kayci has seen and probably done it all — and then some. Coming on board in 2016 as a part-timer, Kayci earned her promotion to assistant director in 2020, so stepping into the role as director is as natural as sliding into home base.
“I love my job,” she says with a huge smile. “I enjoy it, I am passionate about it, I love the kids and I enjoy what I do. I am honored to take on this role and to see the continued growth of all of our programs.”
“I am very excited to see Kayci Stephens take the helm of the Cedartown Recreation Department,” said Cedartown City Commission Chair Sam Branch. “I have known Kayci a long time and it would be nearly impossible to find someone that cares about our community, our kids and our recreation department more than she does. Kayci’s passion and leadership will continue moving this department forward in a direction we can all be proud of.”
Since her time at the city, Kayci’s seen a tremendous increase in the number of participating youth. “I would go as far as to say that it’s quadrupled in number. When I started, we had four in our department. We now have nine. We’re growing so much and I am proud to be a part of that.”
Ready to lead, Kayci’s committed to continuing that growth trend. “We’ve really added so much in just a short time. We took on baseball, added volleyball, and watched the soccer program go from 150 during the first year to nearly 300 currently. We added the Dream League, which is a program designed specifically for exceptional needs students and we’ve opened up our facilities and have used our talents to provide a physical education class for homeschool kids.”
While she’s quick to list off the recreation department’s projects and accomplishments, she’s equally excited to be part of the entire City of Cedartown team. “There are so many good things going on right now in Cedartown, and I am just glad to be a small part of that. I am thankful for this opportunity and I am looking forward to the future.”
“Kayci has earned the trust of management and the City Commission to take on this leadership position with the City of Cedartown,” said City Manager Edward Guzman. “I am excited to see Kayci’s vision for the future come into play as she begins her director role at the Recreation Department.”
