A drug-drop attempt at Hays State Prison in Chattooga County led to a high-speed chase, resulting in a serious injury to a local resident on Saturday. Local media requested information about the accident soon after it happened. Saturday afternoon, Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader issued a press release.
The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office received a tip about possible contraband near the prison around 7 AM. A sheriff’s deputy stopped a suspicious vehicle, but when he approached, the driver and passenger seemed very nervous. When the officer asked the driver to exit the vehicle, the driver fled, prompting a pursuit. The chase continued north on Highway 27, but the vehicle made a sudden U-turn near Dixie Fibers near the Trion Wastewater Treatment Plant and headed south. Preliminary investigations show that the fleeing vehicle ran a red light at Highway 27 and Central Avenue, colliding with another car entering the highway.
All three individuals sustained injuries; the driver of the struck vehicle was taken to the emergency room, while the fleeing driver and passenger were also transported for treatment. Family members of the crash victim, identified as Colbi Jackson, say that she was admitted to intensive care at an area hospital. While sustaining serious injuries, thankfully family members say she is expected to fully recover.
Sheriff Schrader said that all three individuals involved in the accident were initially taken to the Chattooga County Emergency Room.
The Sheriff’s Office stated there are pending charges against the suspects, who are believed to be on probation in metro Atlanta. Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says the investigation into the drug-drop and accident continues.
