Jamie Allison Smith, 38, of Birmingham, Alabama, was sentenced to 15 years in prison this week following a fatal crash that claimed two lives in Coosa back in June 2024.

The ruling was delivered Thursday by Floyd County Superior Court Judge William F. Sparks, who also imposed a $2,500 fine and ordered Smith to pay $8,700 to Georgia’s Crime Victims Compensation Program.

Smith was found guilty of felony homicide by vehicle and serious injury by vehicle in connection with the June 8, 2024 wreck that resulted in the deaths of 18-year-old Rico English and 31-year-old Ashley Jackson.

Investigators determined that Smith, driving a white 2023 Acura, crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a Freightliner tractor-trailer. The impact forced the truck into a Nissan Altima carrying Jackson, English, and 18-year-old Jeremiah Jackson. Jackson and English were on their way to a football camp at Shorter University.

Smith was found to have been driving with a suspended license due to prior DUI charges. Court evidence revealed she had consumed alcohol earlier that morning, and toxicology results confirmed the presence of alcohol and methamphetamine in her system at the time of the crash.

A three vehicle accident on Ga 20 (Alabama Highway) near Halls Valley Road and the Alabama state in Coosa line has resulted in two individuals being killed just before 9 am Saturday.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, an eastbound 2023 Acura, white in color, driven by 38 year-old Jamie Smith, of Birmingham, crossed into the westbound lane where it struck an 18-wheeler truck.  The impact then caused the tractor-trailer to travel into the eastbound lane where it struck a third vehicle, a 2020 Nissan Altima, black in color. The driver of the Altima, 31 year-old Ashley Jackson, and a passenger 18-year-old Rico Jermaine English, both of Birmingham, were killed.

The driver of the Acura and tractor-trailer were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Smith has now been transported to the Floyd County Jail where she was booked in for DUI and two counts of homicide by vehicle, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving, distracted hands-free law violation, driving on wrong side of roadway and failure to maintain lane.
