Calhoun Police said that they were dispatched to a domestic dispute at Buc-ee’s on Union Grove Road just after 4 am on Thursday.
Upon arrival, the male suspect, identified as Robert Smith, fled on foot when officers attempted to place him in handcuffs.
During the pursuit, Smith turned and fired multiple shots at officers. No officers were injured.‘
Smith then carjacked a car from the Buc-ee’s parking lot and fled north on I75.
According to Whitfield County Sheriff Darren Pierce, deputies from his office picked up the pursuit after locating the truck on Chattanooga Road near interstate Exit 336. It was then Smith fired at his deputies. After three miles, Smith lost control of the truck, crashing close to mile marker 339.
Pierce added that when deputies approached his vehicle, the offender was discovered to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
According to Calhoun Police Chief Tony Pyle, the investigation is ongoing and no further details are being released at this time.
