Seven students from Floyd County participated in interviews and auditions for the Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) at the state level, with one student being selected and another named as an alternate.
Ryder Ashmore, a junior at Pepperell High School, has been chosen as a finalist in the Theatre category and invited to attend the GHP Summer Program, which runs from June 15 to July 12.
The program offers a residential, educational experience for high-achieving high school sophomores and juniors, providing a mix of academic classes in the morning and afternoon, along with various social and instructional activities in the evenings. Meals and accommodations are included.
Additionally, Jesus Garcia from Pepperell High School has been selected as an alternate in the Spanish category. Alternates may be called upon to fill any vacancies in the program over the next few weeks, with offers expected to be made by April 29. Each year, approximately 20 students from the alternate list across various academic and artistic areas are invited to participate.
The GHP is a four-week summer program that provides intellectually gifted and artistically talented students with challenging and enriching educational opportunities that aren’t typically available during the school year. Students choose an area of focus for their major, such as agricultural research, biotechnology, communicative arts, dance, engineering, mathematics, music, science, social studies, theatre, visual arts, or world languages, and also select a minor area to explore outside their major.
Applicants must go through a rigorous selection process, including submitting transcripts, nomination forms, endorsements, and undergoing an interview with a local screening committee. The program also includes seminars, activities, concerts, and performances in the evenings.
