Eduardo Perez, 32 of Cedartown, was arrested at a hospital after reports said he bit a nurse and police officer.
Reports said that officers were dispatched to the hospital at 18 Water oak Drive to a report of a disturbance involving Perez. Upon arrival, a nurse allowed the officer through the secure doors and led him to the lunchroom, where he allegedly observed two women and two men restraining Perez on the floor.
Officers said that they noticed Perez actively resisting and attempting to bite those restraining him.
The officer said that he moved to Perez’s right side and secured his right wrist in handcuffs. At that moment, Perez bit the nurse who was holding his left arm. In response, the nurse struck Perez several times to make him release the bite.
Perez then attempted to push himself off the floor, officers reportedly heard bystanders shout, “He is trying to get your gun.”
Officers were able to employe various control techniques, including pressure points and using the handcuff as leverage on his wrist. Despite these efforts, Perez continued to resist and ultimately bit the officer in the right thigh. In response, the officer drew his Taser and attempted a drive stun, which was ineffective.
Officers then deployed the Taser prongs into Perez’s upper back and attempted a follow-up drive stun to
increase the spread of the probes; however, this also proved ineffective. The officer said he continued with 5-6 additional drive stuns, but the Taser eventually stopped functioning.
At this point, backup officers began to arrive on scene and helped gain control of Perez’s uncuffed hand and arm. Backup officers then deployed their taser prongs into Perez’s chest and cycled the device.
Reports continued to say that Perez then raised up and swung at officers, prompting them to deliver several strikes to his face.
Additional officers arrived on scene and were able to gain control of Perez.
Reports went on to add that the officers found that the events began when Perez become violent during breakfast and began throwing food and attempting to fight staff and other patients.
Perez is charged with battery, two counts simple battery, disorderly conduct, obstruction of police and obstruction of EMTs.
