Cory Robert Shelp Jr, 23 of Rome, was arrested this week after reports said he slapped his girlfriend with an open hand before using his fist to repeatedly beat her.
The incident occurred at the pavilion at Heritage Park back on July 16th.
Officers said that while serving his arrest warrant, Shelp attempted to flee the scene on foot before jumping into a river. Arresting officers were then forced to go into the river so that they could take him into custody.
Shelp is charged with battery and two counts of obstruction of justice.
