Rome City Commissioners voted this week to give an across the board pay raise for all city employees.
The raise came after a study revealed that city police officers, firefighters and public works employees are paid nearly 20% less than surrounding counties.
The pay jump will raise the budget an estimated $2.5 million. Of that, $1.6 million would come from the city’s general and enterprise funds with the remainder from the county government.
The recommendation to city commissioners was to create a base pay for firefighters and pubic safety at $52,000. In other departments, the base pay would increase to $16 an hour from its current $13 an hour.
If approved the pay raise is expected to begin on September 1st.
