On Tuesday, Nov. 8 community members joined AdventHealth Redmond and community health partners for an evening of remembrance and hope to shine a light on lung cancer at the town green in downtown Rome.

Together with 210 events nationwide, the Shine a Light event connects and celebrates the lung cancer community while raising national awareness about the disease for Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

Suzanne Blanchard, AdventHealth Redmond lung cancer program coordinator and Lisa Acree, ANP-BC, Lung Clinic Nurse Practitioner introduced the featured experts and Harbin Clinic physicians, Darshak Pandya, MD, Dhru Girard, MD, Matt Mumber, MD, and Ademola Adeseye, MD who spoke to the crowd about the advantage of early detection of lung cancer and today’s innovative treatments. Lung cancer survivor Michele Woodard shared her own story of how early detection saved her life in 2015.

“I was shocked to learn I had lung cancer, especially as a non-smoker. Everyone should listen to their bodies, pay attention and seek treatment if you feel something is not right,” said Woodard.

To conclude the evening, participants were invited to shine a light, honoring those who have lost their lives to cancer and those who are still fighting the disease. The Java Joy beverage truck provided warm beverages and community health partners who attended the event included Harbin Clinic, Georgia Highlands College, Summit Quest and the Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition.
