The following are highlights from the September 18, 2020, Board work session of the Floyd County Board of Education (FCBOE). All agenda items are in bold and can also be found HERE

Child Nutrition Update
FCS Child Nutrition program will not charge any fees to any students for lunches through Dec. 31, 2020 (the end date is dependent on available funding), based on extended meal service flexibilities from the USDA. Breakfast is already served to all students free of charge.

Facilities Update
Capital Outlay Plan FY22 discussion
The Roof at Armuchee High School will be the main item of capital outlay funding during the summer of 2021, which is the beginning of the fiscal year 2022.

Facilities Plan Discussion for 2021 & 2022
For the 2021-2022 school year, the interim superintendent recommended all fifth-grade classes move to their attendance area middle schools, and Pepperell Primary School second grade will move to Pepperell Elementary School. All Floyd County middle schools will house fifth, sixth, and seventh grades. PES will house second, third, and fourth grades. PPS will remain PreK, kindergarten, and first grade. All Floyd County high schools will remain grades eight through 12. Pepperell Middle School will move to its new facility during the summer of 2021. The former McHenry Primary School building will officially close after the move is complete.

For the summer of 2022, the interim superintendent made the recommendation to close Cave Spring Elementary School and Glenwood Primary School due to student enrollment and financial considerations for the school system as a whole. This is the first step in a long-term process of making FCS financially sound. All FCS faculty and staff members will continue to have a position within the school district regardless of school closures.

For the 2022-2023 school year, Armuchee Elementary School will absorb all GPS students. CSES students will be redistricted into existing facilities within the school district.

All stakeholders will have the opportunity to attend community meetings for discussions regarding the upcoming school closures prior to any board vote.

Virtual vs Face to Face Learning Choice
FCS parents will have the opportunity to make a permanent learning environment change for their child(ren) for the 2020-2021 school year ending May 28, 2021. The window to make those changes will be from Monday, September 21 to Friday, October 2 at 4 p.m. Parents will receive communication through the FCS mass notification system with details on how to complete the learning environment change beginning early next week.

Discuss Calendar Options/Teacher Planning Days
The interim superintendent recommended three additional teacher planning days for the current semester due to COVID-19 and scheduling-related issues. The board will be voting during Monday’s regular board meeting to make October 19, October 20, and November 30 teacher planning days/student holidays.
