David Ray Smith, 41 of Rome, was jailed this week at a home on Ashley Oaks Trail when police saw him break into a vehicle in order to commit a theft.
Reports said that when officers attempted to make contact he attempted to flee the scene.
He was captured a short time later and was found with several stolen items, including a gun.
Smith is charged with theft by taking, entering an automobile with intent to commit a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony obstruction and three counts probation violation.
