Janice Thornton, 62 of Rome, pleaded guilty to murdering her husband on Monday.  According to reports, Thornton told authorities that she did not mean to kill her husband back in 2013.  Police said that Thornton shot her husband numerous times as he slept.

Reports added that Steven Thornton, then 58 years-old, suffered wounds to his head, torso, and right arm after being shot by a .22 caliber handgun.

The couple had been married for close to 40 years.  Reports went on to say that the couple had discussed divorce the day he was shot.  The shooting occurred on January 20, but Steven lived until November 25, where he died as a result of injuries he sustained.

She was sentenced to life in prison.

Thornton had pleaded guilty to aggravated battery in August of 2013 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. That sentence will run concurrently with the murder sentence.
