Kelly Wheeler, a senior at Model High School, was named the school’s STAR student last week at a special luncheon in her honor held at Model. Wheeler selected, Tim Burton, band director at Model, as her STAR teacher.
To be named a STAR student, a senior must have the highest SAT score in the school on one test date through November prior to graduation. The student’s SAT scores must be equal to or higher than the national average, and the senior must be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students in the senior class based on grade point average.
The STAR teacher is selected by the STAR student for having made the most significant contribution to the student’s scholastic development.
Wheeler is the Drum Major in the Model Blue Devil Band and she also served in the leadership role for the band as a junior. She was selected to All-State Band playing the clarinet. Wheeler has been in the Model High band since eighth-grade.
Interests for Wheeler include: music education, performance, conducting, elementary school teaching, and youth counseling. She has spent her time in service to the community working with her mother in elderly assistance and working with youth at her church.
Wheeler is considering Lee University and Jacksonville State University after graduation and she plans to pursue a degree in music education.
