Update: An inmate at the Floyd County Jail, Robert Lee Maner, was found dead, hanging in his cell in the L-Block early Tuesday morning.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that an inmate at the Floyd County Jail was pronounced dead at approximately 1:26 a.m. at The Floyd County Jail early this morning by Deputy Floyd County Coroner Ernie Studard. Robert Lee Maner (#1602000710) was booked into the jail on February 10, 2016 on charges of Possession of Methamphetamines and had been in jail for 13 days. Mr. Maner was found alone in his assigned cell in L-Block by jail staff after lockdown rollcall.

“Mr. Maner’s family was notified of his death at approximately 3:00 a.m. and so we are now releasing basic details of the incident as protocol dictates” according to Chief Deputy Tom Caldwell of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office. “The GBI arrived at the jail at approximately 4:40 a.m. and are conducting a full inquiry into the matter already at Sheriff Burkhalter’s request.” Said Caldwell

Per policy, all inmate custody deaths require a full investigation by an outside agency and a potential coroner’s inquest should the information and facts call for one. Any questions can be directed to Chief Caldwell at (706) 252-4698.
