A suicide car bomber attacked a NATO convoy traveling through a crowded neighborhood in Afghanistan`s capital Saturday, killing at least 12 people, including a Rome man. Officials said that Barry Sutton worked for both the Floyd County Police Department and most recently the Floyd County Sheriff`s Office before taking a job with DynCorp International as an independent contractor who trained police officers in Afghanistan.
Two other American civilian contractors for the international military force were also killed.
The bombing also killed at least 11 Afghan civilians and wounded 66. In a statement, NATO said one of the Americans was killed in the blast, while the two others later died of their wounds. The contractors were not named.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. In an email to journalists, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid denied his group was responsible.
Sutton has been employed with DynCorp International since April 2011. He served as a Senior Deputy with the FCSO from November 2009 to April 2011 and was a Patrol Sargent and SWAT team member with the Floyd County Police Department from March 1996 to November 2009.
Floyd County Sheriff Tim Burkhalter spoke to Coosa Valley News and said, `He was not only a fine officer, but a great friend and family man. He will be greatly missed by his law enforcement family.`
