For decades, Barron Stadium has been the stage for some of Rome’s biggest football moments. From the legendary West Rome-East Rome rivalries to NAIA and NCAA Division II showdowns, and more recently the dominance of Rome Wolves football, the historic venue has become synonymous with high-stakes competition.

On Thursday evening, Barron Stadium will once again find itself in the spotlight. This time, however, the action will look a little different. Instead of shoulder pads and hard-hitting tackles, fans will see speed, precision, and playmaking as three of Georgia’s top flag football programs converge on Rome for what promises to be one of the premier regular-season events of the year.

The undefeated Rome Lady Wolves, currently 14-0 and ranked No. 4 in the Georgia High School Flag Football Coaches Poll, will host seventh-ranked Sequoyah and reigning powerhouse Pope, a program that has captured three consecutive state championships and is currently ranked No. 13 nationally in the USA Today rankings.

The event presents a major measuring stick for a Rome program that has quickly developed into one of the state’s rising contenders. While Sequoyah and Pope boast years of experience in one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports, the Lady Wolves have made an impressive leap in only their second season of competition.

Sequoyah enters its seventh season of flag football after being one of the earliest schools in Georgia to adopt the sport as a sanctioned program. Pope, meanwhile, joined the sport in 2021 and has quickly established itself as a dynasty, winning three straight state titles and earning national recognition.

Despite its relative youth, Rome has wasted little time making its mark. The Lady Wolves enjoyed a successful inaugural season that included a playoff victory and a trip to the Sweet 16. Their postseason run ended against perennial state and national power Greenbrier, the three-time defending Georgia state champion that currently holds the No. 3 national ranking in the USA Today poll.

That experience may prove invaluable as Rome prepares to face two of the state’s most accomplished programs. Thursday’s showcase offers the Lady Wolves an opportunity not only to protect their undefeated record but also to demonstrate that they belong among Georgia’s elite as the postseason approaches.

The evening will begin with Rome taking on Sequoyah at 5:30 p.m. Sequoyah and Pope will meet at 6:30 p.m., before the highly anticipated matchup between Rome and Pope caps off the night at 7:30 p.m.

With three nationally and state-recognized programs sharing the field, fans can expect a playoff atmosphere and an opportunity to witness firsthand the explosive growth of girls flag football. For Rome, it is another chance to showcase a program on the rise. For the visitors, it is an opportunity to test themselves against one of Georgia’s hottest teams. And for local football fans, it’s a chance to see some of the best flag football talent in the state compete under the lights at one of Georgia’s most historic football venues.
