A Summerville man says someone may have used his personal information to obtain more than $11,000 in unemployment benefits while he was serving time in state prison. According to a Summerville Police Department report filed October 16, 57-year-old Timothy Ladale Boykin contacted officers after receiving a summons from Chattooga County Magistrate Court related to a case involving the Georgia Department of Labor.

Court documents reportedly showed that $11,614 in unemployment benefits had been issued under Boykin’s name between March 28 and November 14, 2020.

Boykin told police he was incarcerated with the Georgia Department of Corrections during that time and had not applied for or received the benefits. The report lists Coastal State Prison, Clayton County Transition Center and LaGrange Transition Center as facilities where he was housed during the period.

Boykin believes an unidentified person or persons used his identity to file for unemployment benefits without his knowledge. He asked police to document the suspected fraud.

The incident was classified as identity fraud and impersonation. The report did not identify a suspect, and no arrest was reported in connection with the case.
