An investigation is underway after an inmate died at the county jail early Thursday morning, October 15, according to Sheriff Mitch Ralston.

Jail staff discovered the inmate unresponsive inside a cell and called for emergency medical assistance. Despite a quick response from medical personnel, the inmate died.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been asked to lead an independent investigation into the death, a standard procedure in cases involving deaths in custody.

GBI agents were at the jail Thursday morning, working alongside sheriff’s office detectives and the county coroner to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Sheriff Ralston said the investigation remains active, with additional information expected to be released as it becomes available.

No further details about the inmate or the cause of death have been released.
