Did you know your tax refund could disappear after a while? If you are due a refund from the IRS, you have three years from the original filing date to file your return to ensure you will receive your refund, after that time the refund goes away. On the flipside though, if you owe the IRS that debt has no expiration date with the federal government. So, for example, if you have not filed your 2023 tax return yet and think you will be entitled a refund, then you will only have until the filing date of next year (usually April 15th) to file your 2023 taxes to ensure you will indeed get your refund entitled to you. People can get embarrassed when they go years without filing or think it will be too much of a headache to try to get together or explain, but we understand life happens and are more than happy to help you get caught up if needed, no judgement whatsoever. Most tax pros, Enrolled Agents, or CPAs just want to make sure their clients get all they are entitled to receive. Just make sure you stay aware of deadline dates.
Speaking of deadline dates; October 15th is the deadline to finish your 2025 taxes if you filed an extension with the IRS.
Don’t miss out of money you are due, because the IRS will make sure they won’t.
This story was written by Reagan Manning, marketing director of H&R Block in Rome. Manning will be sharing practical tax tips and timely information designed to help taxpayers across Northwest Georgia better understand changes in tax laws, regulations and filing requirements. Through this ongoing series, local readers can find useful information to help them make informed tax decisions and prepare for the upcoming tax season.
H&R Block has been a trusted name in tax preparation for over 70 years. We have been an established branch in Rome for more than half of that time, and a locally owned franchise for almost 20 years. Things shared are from H&R Block corporate, the IRS, or local expertise from an enrolled agent or qualified tax preparer that we feel is important to share locally. We hope to help our community keep up with some of the tax changes and news that occur throughout the year that may impact or help them. Consultation appointments and questions at our Rome locations are always free.
