The Gordon County Board of Education has approved its portion of the county’s 2026 property tax rate as the school system begins a new academic year.

During Monday night’s meeting, Superintendent Alice Mashburn recommended establishing the school system’s 2026 rollback millage rate at 14.529 mills. Board members unanimously approved the recommendation following a brief discussion.

Board member Eddie Hall praised the administration for its efforts to reduce the millage rate, saying the lower rate would be welcomed by local taxpayers.

The board also took action on several other items during the meeting.

Members approved the FY 2027-28 school calendar, which was developed after the school system sought input from the community through an online survey. The calendar receiving the most support from participants was selected for board consideration and ultimately approved.

The board also authorized a Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) Comprehensive Local Needs Assessment (CLNA) Perkins Program Improvement Fund for the 2026-27 school year. The program carries a budget of $69,877, with funding designated for expenses including substitute coverage for CTAE personnel, staff travel and other program-related needs.

Other business approved Monday included a property exchange between Gordon County Schools and the county government, along with a contract related to special education services.

The board also approved all personnel recommendations presented during the meeting.

Members were reminded that the board’s next work session is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8, while the school system’s fall break is set for Oct. 12-16.

The next regular meeting of the Gordon County Schools Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.
