Families from across Northwest Georgia are invited to explore emergency vehicles, meet local first responders and discover new ways to enjoy and protect the outdoors during the Firewise Adventure Day event.
The free event on Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Camp Sidney Dew is open to the public and will combine the excitement of a Touch a Truck event with hands-on Scouting demonstrations and educational programs focused on environmental awareness, wildfire prevention and natural resource protection.
Visitors will have opportunities to see specialized vehicles and equipment from several area agencies and organizations including the Floyd County Police Department Bomb Squad and SWAT Team, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Floyd County Emergency Management Agency and Georgia Power, along with other community partners.
Children and adults will be able to get an up-close look at equipment used by first responders, emergency personnel and utility crews while learning about the important work these agencies perform throughout Northwest Georgia.
Local Scouting America units will also present demonstrations and displays highlighting the wide range of experiences available through Scouting. Activities will include Pinewood Derby racing, backpacking, high-adventure programs, outdoor skills and environmental education.
“Firewise Adventure Day is designed to make learning about safety and conservation fun for the entire family,” said event organizer Max McAdams. “You can come meet the people who help protect our communities, explore some safety vehicles and equipment, and learn how young people can become responsible leaders and stewards of the outdoors through Scouting.”
The event will highlight the role individuals and families can play in protecting homes, forests and natural resources. Educational presentations will introduce practical ideas for environmental stewardship, outdoor preparedness and reducing the risks associated with wildfires.
Scout units throughout Northwest Georgia will be in attendance. Families interested in joining Scouting will be able to speak directly with local leaders, learn about nearby programs and discover opportunities available to children and teenagers.
Firewise Adventure Day will be held at Camp Sidney Dew, a Scouting America camp located among the forests and hills of northern Floyd County. The camp provides an ideal setting for a day centered on outdoor adventure, public safety and conservation.
Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.
