A longtime downtown Cedartown landmark is celebrating a major milestone this weekend as The West Cinema commemorates 85 years of entertaining the community. The historic theater, located just off Main Street, will host an anniversary celebration Saturday from noon until 8 p.m. A section of West Avenue will be closed during the festivities to make room for a variety of activities.

Visitors can expect live music from a DJ, a car show, food vendors, craft vendors and movies throughout the day. The celebration will also offer residents an opportunity to visit the theater and reflect on its place in Cedartown’s history.

The anniversary festivities will continue into the evening with a murder mystery theater dinner planned at the historic venue.

Over the years, The West Cinema has been more than a place to watch a movie. Generations of local residents have connected the theater with special memories, including first dates, family outings and live performances.

Saturday’s celebration will give current and former residents a chance to come together, enjoy the festivities and recognize a downtown institution that has remained a part of Cedartown for 85 years.

When Josh Kirby, along with John and Vipi Dunn, took ownership of The West Cinema five years ago, he took on more than a historic theater, he took on a piece of Cedartown’s community heritage. Kirby said he enjoys being part of the community and takes pride in keeping the traditional movie theater experience alive for families throughout Northwest Georgia.

A major part of his goal has been making the theater affordable, with ticket and concession prices kept low so families can enjoy a movie together without the experience becoming a financial burden. The theater also gives back to the community through its Free Mystery Movie Monday program, offering residents an opportunity to enjoy a movie at no cost.

For Kirby, preserving The West Cinema is about more than showing films; it’s about creating an affordable place where families can make memories and ensuring a beloved local tradition continues for future generations.
