The City of Rome is seeking up to $2 million in state transportation funding to help address needed repairs to the South Broad Street Bridge, as city officials continue to pursue funding for a potential complete replacement.
Rome City Manager Sammy Rich explained to commissioners that the city is aware the condition of the South Broad Street Bridge will require significant work, either through a major repair project or complete replacement.
The city has requested funding for a full replacement of the bridge. However, officials are also pursuing repair funding that could be used if a complete replacement is not approved.
Commissioner Wayne Robinson made a motion to adopt a resolution authorizing the city to submit an application to the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank, commonly known as GTIB.
Under the proposed application, Rome would seek a $1 million GTIB grant and a $1 million GTIB loan, providing a combined $2 million in funding that could be used toward repairs to the South Broad Street Bridge.
Commissioner Beeman seconded the motion.
The commission unanimously approved the resolution authorizing the GTIB application.
In addition to the GTIB request, the city has also applied for a $2 million grant through the Regional Commission to assist with bridge repairs.
The funding efforts are part of the city’s broader plan to address the future of the South Broad Street Bridge, with officials continuing to seek funding for a complete replacement while keeping repair funding available as an alternative.
