Winning a state championship in Georgia high school football is a rare achievement. Of the GHSA’s 413 football‑playing schools, only 136 have ever captured a state title, according to historical records that include championships earned in the former Georgia Interscholastic Association, which governed athletics for Black schools prior to its merger with the GHSA.
Northwest Georgia programs make up a notable portion of that elite group, with several schools across Floyd, Polk, Bartow, and surrounding counties holding championship banners that span more than seven decades.
Calhoun Leads Region as Most Recent Champion
The area’s newest title belongs to Calhoun, which claimed the 2024 state championship, adding to its long‑running reputation as one of Georgia’s most consistent football powers.
Rome, Cartersville Among Modern‑Era Winners
Two of the region’s largest programs earned championships in the past decade:
Rome captured its most recent title in 2017, a season that cemented the Wolves as a statewide force. Rome posted a flawless 15–0 overall record and an 8–0 region record, finishing first in Region 7‑AAAAA. They outscored opponents 758–142 across the season, averaging more than 50 points per game while allowing fewer than 10. Rome defeated Warner Robins 38–0 in the Class 5A state title game, completing the first undefeated season in school history. The win also marked Rome’s second straight state championship, extending their winning streak to 27 consecutive games.
Cartersville won in 2016, continuing a dominant run that included multiple championship appearances. Cartersville’s 2016 season stands out for several reasons: 30‑game winning streak — tied for one of the longest streaks in state history, Consecutive 15–0 seasons (2015 & 2016), one of only 11 programs in Georgia history to achieve this and 695 points scored, the fourth‑highest single‑season total ever recorded in Georgia.
Historic Champions Across Northwest Georgia
Several smaller schools also hold places in Georgia’s football history:
- Darlington — last title in 1998. The Tigers finished the year 15–0, won the GHSA Class A state championship, and delivered a postseason run that cemented the program as one of the era’s elite teams.
- Pepperell — 1990
- Model — 1979
- Trion — 1974
- Coosa — 1969
- Cedartown — 1963
- Rockmart — 1950
These championships remain points of pride in their communities, many of which have supported football programs for generations.
A Rare Achievement in a Football‑Rich Region
With only one‑third of GHSA schools ever winning a state title, Northwest Georgia’s collection of champions stands out. From Rockmart’s 1950 crown to Calhoun’s 2024 victory, the region’s football legacy spans eras, classifications, and community identities.
For local fans, these titles represent more than trophies — they mark defining moments in school history and continue to shape the culture of Friday nights across the region.
