A Gordon County deputy has been recognized for his actions in safely resolving a mental health crisis involving a juvenile.
According to the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Gabe Shipman responded to a private residence near the Farmville community on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 2, after receiving a 911 call reporting that a juvenile was armed with a knife and threatening suicide.
When he arrived, Deputy Shipman quickly took control of the situation. Authorities said he used calm communication and negotiation to convince the juvenile to put down the knife and accept medical treatment without anyone being injured.
In recognition of his response, Sheriff Mitch Ralston presented Deputy Shipman with the Sheriff’s Office Commendation Medal.
“Deputy Shipman’s actions were brave and compassionate,” Sheriff Ralston said. “I am proud of him, and we hope that the juvenile involved in this event recovers fully.”
The Sheriff’s Office did not release additional details about the juvenile or the incident.
